Data My Ass? CPF NB Reminding Premier Higgs About the Government’s Own Data
SUSSEX, NB- In light of recent events and comments around French Immersion, CPF NB is reminding the Premier that the recently released Grade 12 French Second Language Oral Proficiency results continue to demonstrate resounding success in New Brunswick’s French Immersion systems. Given the understandable skepticism amongst New Brunswickers on whether or not the provincial government is using sound data, CPF NB wants to ensure they are aware of their own statistics and results.
Highlights of the 2021-22 proficiency results include:
- 93.2% of the 1391 students assessed across all programs obtained intermediate and above;
- The average proficiency result since 2017-18 is 91.32% that received intermediate or above;
- In the grade 3 entry point, 98.7% attained intermediate or above;
- In the grade 6 entry point, 92.1% attained intermediate or above;
- Of the 1391 students evaluated, only 59 were post-intensive French students, 40.7% ofwhich attained intermediate or above.
“It is important to recognize that according to the provincial oral proficiency scales, intermediate constitutes a level B1.1 of French, the level that the Premier wants New Brunswickers to reach by graduation” says Chris Collins, Executive Director of CPF NB. “The results this year demonstrate another year of success, despite COVID-19 impacts in schools. Instead of fearing the elimination of our French Immersion system, New Brunswickers should be recognizing the success of our program and working together to enhance FSL learning for all New Brunswickers without eliminating our French Immersion system”.
